2025: The year podcasts dethroned traditional radio in the US

Q4 2025 figures mark a historic turning point for the audio industry. For the first time, the market share of podcasts for spoken-word audio content has surpassed that of AM/FM radio in the United States.

A structural shift in ten years

Podcasts: 40% of daily listening time.
AM/FM Radio: 39%, including over-the-air broadcasting and digital streams.

In 2015, radio still dominated by a wide margin with 75% market share, compared to a podcast share limited to 10%. A decade later, the curves have crossed. The shift is now a concrete reality.

What do we do now?

If you manage a station or a media brand, the urgency is no longer to “save” FM, but to occupy the entire sound space.

  • Stop dividing: A podcast is on-demand radio without the constraints of a broadcast grid. Radio is a podcast, but with the energy of live broadcasting.

  • Be everywhere: We must no longer limit ourselves to one channel. Listeners do not care about the technicalities; they want content that speaks to them, wherever they are.

  • Live must become an event again: For radio, the challenge is to create “unmissable” moments that people want to experience in real-time.

Let’s be agile. Adapt your content to the format of each channel without ever losing the brand’s DNA. Accelerating this transformation is no longer an option, but a necessity to capture new opportunities in the global audio ecosystem.

Let’s talk about it. Yello Agency helps you evolve your teams, your content, and create events that are in tune with the times.
