There are hundreds of good radio shows in the world, but amazing radio shows are extremely rare! Here are 3 differences between a good and an amazing radio morning show! What do you prefer?
The connection with the listeners:
In a good show: we address listeners as acquaintances, they laugh at the host’s jokes, they served them as a foil. When we organize meet and greets with the listeners, the hosts are polite and courteous as if interacting with a client.
In an amazing show: listeners are fully integrated into the system, they see the presenters as real friends, they are integrated into the highlights and participate in them. During meet and greets with listeners, the hosts create a genuine close connection with them and show interest in their lives: they know each other and are happy to spend time together. The listeners are the pillars of the show.
The work :
In a good show: the hosts and the teams prepare a classic and well-organized show, often the day before. The topics are for the most part connected to current events; special days, TV shows, cinema events… expected and ordinary radio topics.
During the show, they discuss the various topics without focusing on the actual show. Their show is good but they are in a routine.
In an amazing show: the hosts and the teams create a more detailed schedule further in advance which offers a glance at all future events and opportunities coming down the pipeline. They prepare for each show daily but also work to mount more elaborate shows through proper research and insight into current events and trends. Though “classic” topics are still used, each intervention is a pretext to be linked to more current news: any subject can be elevated if it is skillfully used.
During the show, the hosts create a positive mood but are very focused on everything that happens and rehearse the mechanics in advance. Thanks to their concentration and their strong personalities, the hosts have the energy and creativity necessary to make the show evolve in real-time.
The sale of the program and the radio:
In a good show: Teasers are commonly used for events and contests, the sale and claim of the show are clean but not surprising. The hosts master the clock and offer an effective show.
In an amazing show: the hosts fight over each intervention. They claim the program with passion and renew themselves every day. Each intervention allows them to create a link with the listener: with a joke, info, an emotion … The teasers are prepared and formulated in a concrete way to be attractive: no more “gifts and surprises”, listeners want to know what they will find on the show.
To conclude, a good program can be successful and be listened to, however, it will always lack that extra something for the listener. It will be part of their daily routine but will not leave a lasting impression.
An amazing show requires more commitment, hard work and talent and will there in create a magical listening experience. An amazing show will be remembered, talked about with others and become part of radio history among listeners and within the radio network.
As radio broadcasters, we have a simpler life than most of our listeners, so why not ensure we are making their lives a little better each day?
A great morning show can set the tone for the entire day, so let’s be sure to give our listeners exactly that! We have the privilege of being the first people our listeners connect with each day, so let’s create a show with the commitment, sincerity and passion our listeners deserve.
