I am regularly asked about what type of morning’s orientation is best for a musical station?
Almost every time, I recommend entertainment rather than news, practical service or 100% music.

I’ll explain why!

We are currently living in a fairly negative society: pandemic, strikes, conflicts, aggression, climatic change…

Our listeners have difficulties with money, they have problems at work, couple problems, their children have poor results at school … Often in the morning, they would rather go back to sleep to forget their daily difficulties. This is where we arrive.

This is where the magic of morning radio can work. We are their 1st link with the outside world and often the 1st voice they will hear when they wake up! Even if we don’t save lives, our mission is extremely important. Let’s help our listeners start their day better!

If we only broadcast music to them, they will have a good time but will always have their problems in mind. If we focus on pure news, they will go to mainstream radio, which will do so with more resources than we do.

There remains only practical service or entertainment that can allow them to change their minds. Practical information is relevant when it is very localized. The listener in the south of the country will have little interest in a good restaurant, traffic info or the weather in the north of the country.

In the case of a national radio station, its interest is therefore limited. It’s interesting on local radio, but let’s not forget that today our listeners have all this information even faster than before thanks to their smartphones. So we can do a little, but it will not be with this that we create radio fans.

From there, we have the entertainment. And not just by default! What could be better today than make our listeners smile and laugh?

What could be better than change their ideas? Make them forget everyday life or make it less negative?

To me, nothing.

Entertain is have fun around all aspects of life that affect our listeners: news, couple, work, children… Life!

Which TV show impress you the most? For me : Tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon : a pure entertainment show! I bet that for you too, it’s an entertainment show.

Why is a company like Disney so powerful? Because it has created an entertainment empire: movies, amusement parks, toys, series and of course cartoons! We can’t do without ! Be aware of the power you have over your listeners in the morning: it’s you who set the mood for the day. Might as well amuse them, right?

Entertaining is not an end in itself. You then need to know how to do it: what content, for whom, with whom, what type of storytelling,..

I recently read this study: in France, 94% of people consider entertainment as essential to their lives. And for 87% of them, having fun is the greatest pleasure in life (source Iligo – January 2020). So why deprive yourself ?
