A few years ago, most of the programs directors asked their hosts not to talk about them, in order to avoid fleeing the listeners. Some even asked the hosts to be as smooth as possible.
I never had this conviction.
To please everyone is to please anyone. While in radio, we have a specific target and we know it. It is to this target that we must address and please.
That’s why, I find it essential to tell his life on the air.
Have you ever become friends with someone who never tells you anything about his life?
Impossible !
If we want our listeners to focus on the hosts, they must know them and be able to identify with them.
In music, what are the titles that affect us the most? Those where artists use their songs to tell a story and convey intimacy. To make us feel that they are, at the same time, our best friend and ourselves.
It’s the same thing with radio.
The more the content of the interventions is relevant to our listeners, the more they are listening.
They must identify with the hosts. They must to both recognize each other, then recognize their friends in the interventions of talents on the air.
There is of course a nuance to all that.
To tell his life to say nothing is obviously a mistake.
We must continue to build the interventions, work on how to tell the story, have a striking start and an effective fall. All in a short time!
Imagine that you are having a drink with your friends. One of them tells a story. What will hold your attention, it’s going to be the energy he puts in, his way of telling it and his personality. His story can quickly become boring if he does not put his own or is too long.
To conclude, the hosts must be on air as they are in life with their friends. It is therefore necessary to choose them, in affinity with the target of the radio. If this is not the case, they will play a role and will be less effective.
A good host, who knows how to tell good stories by putting in moments of his personal life, is the assurance of captivating the listener.
And the more the listener is captivated, the more he becomes a faithful listener and fan of the show.
As a consultant, I pass on my values to everyone in a team. I am also here to bring ideas and topics that help animators break their shell and show themselves as they are in life! That’s how they turn into great hosts of a big show.
