The hosts are not just present to announce music or read papers.
At every moment, they must manage the clock, give the rhythm of the show, be entertaining, make the listener love to them.
To have good ratings, their show must be extremely well adjusted.
There are 5 essentials things to remember when you host a show.
1- The mechanics
During a party, when we receive guests, they do not all arrive at the same time: we must welcome them every time they ring the bell.
It’s the same thing on the radio. At the beginning of each intervention, we must thank the listeners for being there, reminding them where they are and what they will find on the show. We must also give them a good reason to stay at the end of each intervention. Too many hosts forget these basics.
2- Target the listener
When we go shopping, do we prefer shops that welcome us a “hello to all” or those who recognize us and offer us a personalized welcome? Personally, I prefer to feel unique.
The hosts don’t address to a crowd. When we listen to the radio, a personalized welcoming is better.
We need to know who we are addressing by defining a typical listener profile.
To address everyone, would be like addressing anyone: so a mistake!
3- Tell a story
We all have 2 types of friends: those we love to hear tell their lives and unfortunately those where we quickly pick up when they talk about them.
The charisma is important, but there are also concrete techniques that keep the listeners: get into the story very quickly, create a rebound regularly and end with a fall. With that in mind, we will win and keep the attention of the listener.
4- Sell your show
At every moment, the host must give to the listener good reasons to listen to his show a few minutes more! Listening duration is essential! It’s not talking about gifts, surprises or the best music. You have to be as concrete as possible! With specific examples that will motivate the listener to stay longer.
5- Make shine!
Radio is the magic of the voice! The hosts can touch the imagination of the listeners with the vocabulary they use.
We must find the right words that will highlight what the hosts are talking about. Some situations can be exaggerated to be more glamorous or more entertaining, rather classic gifts can be sublimated by selling it as if they were unique…
The host is the commercial of his own program, he must convince the listener that the best stories are told, the best music is played and the best gifts are won in his show.
With a rigorous and daily work on these 5 essentials, a show will have all the bases to be successful.
As a consultant, my job is to help you concretely excel in these essentials and find ways to renew them on a daily basis to always surprise and make the listener dream.
